CEZANNE’S APPLES

The apples lie there, larger

than life, leaping from the canvas,

so many canvases—tempting;

you paint them over and over,

like  real apples you eat

and eat again, each bite

bursting anew in your mouth;

each brush stroke creates new food,

each dab of color, a mood;

motion of heart, hand,

arm, eye, you paint them

forever until you are surrounded—

apples that sit—forever—

in bowls, on tables, suspended

in the air, hung on walls—there

they all are: watchful, poised,

permanent, yet somehow hungry,

between you and the door.

About the author:
Cordelia Hanemann. As an artist I am much influenced by the work of abstractionists Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Frantisek Kupka, and Cezanne [post-expressionist], so I often write about their work. My poetry is influenced by many readings. The poems I’ve sent reflect the influence of Forrest Gander, a post-modernist poet, William Brewer, and Louise Gluck.
