Art: Hummingbird 1 by Alan Neider

FISHING WITH MY MOTHER

Sometimes I am a big-haired, frazzled neurotic,
causing Mom to drop her pole and run to me,
though I am beyond legal and should have my own boat.

And, at times, standing at the water,
the river comes to our toes equally;
The threat crosses our fingers.

Sometimes we mingle and wrangle,
and our communication goes awry
the way our fishing lines tangle,
only pleasure to a cat’s play.
