Art: Evening Road by Oksana Reznik

The Brian Head Fire

Deer and a few pronghorn
wander onto Main Street
and chew petunias
from the planter boxes. Hooves
scratch on the asphalt. A shadow
extends until the sun is a solid red coin
without a face. The pillar, lighter
than air, cools the morning shade,
melts the cliffs from orange
to vermillion. It rises, so large
that you could never look
all of it all at once.

The end of the world leers
over the ridgetop. Speckled wind
slithers east. The taste of burning hair

permeates when it crosses through the cattle
pastures up the canyon.

Woodsmoke, almost white,
turns black when buildings start
to burn. Ash doesn’t drift in like snow,
it falls like cartilage spat back
onto a dinnerplate. Hymns cough
from helicopters tilting out
to the reservoir and back, so small
against the flickering sky. A procession
of trucks drive through town and turn
off their sirens because no one
else is on the road.
