THE WHITE CURTAIN

pulled around you is immaculate
as a field of snow, and has
the same protective instinct.

This could be temporary.
White sky suggests a pause.
A blank screen evokes omission.

You wanted something
with a wanting that won’t return.
A subtle undulation reminds you

of the presence of a ghost,
as you lie in morphine stillness
with visions of dust and ashes and nothing.

When someone says your name
you hope you will answer
in a voice you recognize as your own.
