Art: Foundwork by Zachary McRae

The Last Born in Volatility

I cut my knuckle
disassembling his crib
and sadness rushed me
and all my indecisions,
this being the last
of the baby stuff
stacking up in the garage.

Days later, wife’s question
still unanswered, I wandered
her garden for a poultice
of comfrey. Our son
helped me. The sun hung
like the crooked, fast clock
in our kitchen.

When we were finished
I wrapped my finger
and tucked him in bed,
stuffed paws standing guard
against loud memories and
along one rail, covering
a nail slightly jutted out.

In the artist’s words:

Zachary McRae

I have been painting and drawing for most of my life, but it wasn’t until after suffering through a traumatic accident in 2014 that I prioritized my passion for art making. After graduating with a degree in Anthropology in 2015, I pursued several opportunities to advance my career in art such as participating in group shows at Cottonwood Center for the Arts in Colorado Springs, CO. as well as accepting multiple commissions for public murals.

I recently moved to NYC to further immerse myself in a thriving arts community.

I make process based paintings that test the durability of limitations imposed by physical law. I allow my body and the materials a certain amount of agency to create the foundational components of any given composition prior to imposing my own imaginative and/or aesthetic determinations. In this way, I seek to create a more perfect balance between my mind and body through my art practice.
